22-25 MEI 2023

It’s Siebe’s birthday! It’s the 22nd of May, and he turned 4 years old today. Somehow, I planned a travel day on this day, but we tried to make it special anyway. I bought some balloons earlier, and we made the decorations for the RV already for my birthday, so after the campfire last night, we organised the RV and made it birthday-proof. Of course, in the middle of it, he had too pee so I had to close his eyes to prevent him from seeing the surprise. We wrapped the gifts and went to bed. In the morning, he was so happy!! He was super happy with his Mickey Mouse, and we bought this at IKEA, it’s like a road you can drive cars on, but the thing he was most happy with (and didn’t take off for the rest of the day) were goggles. He wanted to go swimming right away. But first, we made pancakes for breakfast at ate them at our picknick table in the middle of beautiful nature.

After leaving the Grand Canyon, we drove to Page Lake Powell. Every time Google tells us it’s about 3-4 hours driving, we know now, it will take us the whole day to drive there. We drove onwards, and the scenery was amazing. We went from the Canyon and it’s red rocks to deserts, greenery, desert again and trees again. We stayed at Page Lake Powell Campground, and as soon as we parked in to the parking spot, the kids were in their swimming gear and went to the pool. After Max awoke, I joined them and we met another Dutch family travelling through the USA in a RV. They have kids the same age and they kind played together for some time.

For dinner, we made Siebe’s favorite (Pasta Carbonara) and cake for dessert. Time to go to bed! Marjolein (the Dutch mom from the day before) advised us to go to Antilope Canyon the next day, they did a lovely tour there this morning. Before, on the internet, I could only find companies who didn’t want to take kids down there, but this one, in the Lower Canyon did. And because it’s the Lower Canyon, and the Upper Canyon and Canyon X are more popular, it was relatively quiet. It was funny though, we had to be there 30minutes in advance, but as soon as you enter Navajo land, the time difference changes one hour, so we were there early.. to find out that this company doesn’t adjust for this time difference, so we were 1,5 hour early instead of 30 minutes. Luckily, we could enter an earlier tour.

After you descend some stairs, its al nooks and curves but we were allowed to carry Max in the baby carrier and Nora in the Deuter Kid carrier, and Siebe was in between us so it went beautifully. It was amazing to be inside these rock formations, or sand creations, and even though it was probably not as perfect as it could be, it was perfect to us and the kids. We had a lovely guide and I made a lot of pictures. After an hour, we hade some more cake and went back to the campsite. We went swimming at the pool and had an early dinner.

After dinner, we drove to Horseshoe Bend to see the sunset. It was a lot cooler than during the day, and the kids were very happy and running around. I made some nice pictures and afterwards we went home.

It’s great to do an early morning and end-of-day activity. We leave for Mesa Verde National Park the next day!
